When conventional wood is used for a playground structure or garden bed, people come in direct contact with harmful chemicals on treated lumber. However, there are many alternatives to the standard wood products on the market. At environmentally responsible lumberyards there are options such as certified lumber, recycled wood, tree-free lumber products, composite lumber, a 50/50 blend of wood waste and recycled plastic, and 100% recycled plastic lumber. And when shopping for lumber, see that it has been certified by the international non-profit group Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring that the wood was properly harvested from sustainably managed forests. Also consider using salvaged wood when possible, measure twice and cut once to avoid waste, seek alternatives to wood products, such as formaldehyde and tree-free wheatboard (a healthy substitution for particle board made from an agricultural waste stream). Consider using eco-friendly woods and materials, as they are attractive, durable, and greener building alternatives.
