Wind is a clean, renewable form of energy, and is the world’s fastest growing power source. Depending on the local climate, it may be possible to install a windmill to generate electricity for a home; if not possible, consider checking the green energy option from the utility company, in which a portion of the electricity is generated from commercial wind farms. A wind power system consists of sets of turbines that harness the winds kinetic power, transforming it into a mechanical form for practical energy usage. The energy collected in utility scale turbines is fed into power lines, where it is mixed with power from other sources and delivered to homes, businesses and utility companies. A smaller sized turbine can create enough electricity to power a household for an entire year, while some of the larger turbines are able to power up to 500 homes for a year. Excess energy can be sold to local power companies allowing it to be used at times when the wind isn’t blowing, and technology has improved, creating safer wind turbines for birds or other wildlife.
